Our Muse Knowledge discovery solutions support modern libraries, e-learning hubs, national education portals and research gateways in connecting people to the digital research and educational materials they need, wherever they are.
Our particular focus is supporting emerging economies in advancing their education and innovation initiatives. Our current flagship project is in partnership with the government of Egypt to power its Egyptian Knowledge Bank (EKB), the world’s largest digital library providing every Egyptian citizen free access to the world’s leading education and research materials, a centerpiece for the Egyptian Learning Society under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
The roots of Muse Knowledge began with the fascination, imagination and expertise of Dr. Peter Noerr. Raised in South Africa, Dr. Noerr’s pioneering Computer Science studies in early 1970’s led him to design and implement forward-thinking information retrieval systems for the British Library and a number of European university libraries and research centers.
In the early 1980’s Dr. Noerr, together with his wife, Kate Noerr, commercialized TINLIB (TIN, for The Information Navigator), which became one of the most widely installed integrated library systems in Europe and later worldwide. When TINLIB was selected by the National Library of Romania, Dr. Noerr was introduced to the country’s leading computer science students, who soon after became interns at his company. One of these interns was Mihai Popa, and this began a long and strong bond between the two computer scientists.
In the late 1990’s Dr. Noerr and Mihai Popa began work together on the first designs for a Multi-user Universal Search Environment, known as MUSE. Their vision for Muse was to simplify access to the best digital information collections, a process that came to be known as “federated search”. When in 2001 Dr. Noerr and Kate Noerr established the US company, MuseGlobal, Inc., to bring MUSE to the marketplace, Mihai Popa founded the Romanian company, MuseGlobal S.A., to house expert developers devoted exclusively to the design and development of the MUSE technology.
This unique collaboration between Dr. Noerr and Mihai Popa continued until Dr. Noerr’s death in 2013, and today, Mihai Popa and his team successfully carry on Dr. Noerr’s legacy. MuseGlobal S.A. Romania became the headquarters for MUSE in 2014, and in 2016, under the guidance of Mihai Popa, and his senior technical team – David Dascalescu, Mihai Gabroveanu, Leonard Petrescu and Aurelian Popescu – Muse Knowledge solutions were launched.
